General Information
Although the Melbourne Jain Association was
formed only in 1996, several Jain families have lived in Melbourne for
many years. The main activity among some of these families was the samvatsari
pratikraman to mark the end of the paryushan
festival. The visit to Melbourne of late Swati Sri Bhattaraka
Charukeerthiji from Moodbidri, India in 1996 proved to be the catalyst
for the formation of the Jain Association in Melbourne.
The Jain Association in Melbourne is a loose
amalgam of families who are interested in Jain teachings, rituals,
philosophy etc. not only for themselves but, more importantly, for their
children. There is no formal structure as such, e.g. there are no
office-bearers, and the activities are organised by enthusiastic members
of the association. Members get together every 6-8 weeks. The meetings
are held on a rotating basis at the residence of a member family. During
the meetings there are sessions on childrens' story-telling, discussion
on a selected topic of Jain philosophy (e.g non-violence), singing of
Jain stavans and Aarti. This is followed by a sumptuous
food prepared by all the participants. There is also a small library,
which holds books on Jain philosophy in different languages. Over the
past couple of years, the members have been privileged, by visiting Jain
monks from India.
With time and resources, the association hopes
to expand and diversify the range of activities for the benefit of
member families, importantly their children.
